So I acquired a pistol before the transfer laws between private parties came into effect, can I now legally transfer the ownership to someone else through an
FFL?
How can I trace any ownership history of said pistol?
Thanks in advance guys

Yes, you can transfer the handgun to a new owner thru a FFL.johnnyquick1 wrote:So I acquired a pistol before the transfer laws between private parties came into effect, can I now legally transfer the ownership to someone else through an

No, you won't be able to know prior ownership(s) unless all transfers were thru FFL's and the ATF had a reason to track it. They would have to contact each FFL (one at a time) in order to know who the purchaser(s) were.
