What is YOUR deer slayer?
I read an article today while getting my oil changed saying the 6.5 creedmoor is the ultimate big game hunters cartridge, and it got me thinking about all the different calibers used for hunting. I'm hoping this will bring the hunting talk to life, but what set up are you guys using for big game? Rifle, models, calibers, scopes, etc. Me personally, I am really enjoying my savage 110 in 7mm rem mag topped with a simmons aetec 2.8-10x40.

Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
Tikka T3 Lite SS left hand .308 with a newer Redfield 3-9x. Mag fed and stainless...perfect for all of WA. Only quibble is the price of those plastic mags...$60 or more, criminal!
While 6.5C looks like an awesome cartridge, I am a fan of being able to pop into the local grocery store/bait shop/burger stand and buy ammo. .30-06, .30-30, and .308 are the only three I've seen in every store that sells ammo. .270, .300WM and 7mmRM not far behind.

Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
For deer I use my .257 wby sub-moa or savage 99C .243. For elk I grab my Browning A-bolt .300 win mag or FN Browning bolt .30-06. I use hand loads for all my rifles. TTSXs for all of my belted magnum cartridges and Speer hot-cors in my standards.

Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
There are some other great calibers out there for hunting. But my personal favorites are the .30-06 and .308 both in Remington 700s and a Remington 742 shooting either 150 gr or 180gr soft points. I have shot lots of elk and deer with them. Very rarely have I had to shoot an animal more then once. It's what I grew up shooting and it works for me so I've never seen the point in going to something else although I do have a .270win in my collection now.

Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
My favorite Deer rifle is a Rem 700 in 270, i use 145gn ELD-x. Now for ELK, i am using 212gn ELD-x, 96gn of Retumbo at 3295fps in a 300-RUM, my old faithful Elk gun. I am currently having a Custom 6.5 SAUM built by Chris at Long Range Customs for my new Deer gun. Excited to have it finished soon. I'll top it off with a new Shepherd Scope! :{)

Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
Ruger M77 chambered in .280 Rem. It was my grandfathers gun forever and he past it down to me on my birthday years ago. It's got an old tasco scope on it, does the trick though! I love the caliber, hits hard, shoots flat. Very capable of shooting a good distance. Good elk rifle as well. Wouldn't mind upgrading the scope, bedding the action, and upgrading the stock. But I also wouldn't mind getting a 300 win or a 300 rum.

Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
What a beaut. There's not much you can't do with the old 308. Especially when you practice. I've put about 100 rounds through the 7mm in the last month practicing different ranges, inclines, and weather conditions. I think I got it good, but I'm buying a swfa scope here for my 300wm soon. Time to start practicing again!

Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
What swayed your decision to go to the .308 instead of .30-06, 300wm, 300rum, etc?

Whitetail, I love my Ruger Hawkeye in 25-06, the great American western hunting cartridge, good for ground squirels, coyote, on up to a big whitail buck, as for Mulies or elk, I deploy my Rem 700 in 7mm.

Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
I wanted something I can shoot X amount without having to worry about recoil with no muzzle brake. I shot a 30-06 growing up, still do and I just wanted a different caliber. Didn't see the need for a wm, or rum or any other big calibers. What swayed your decision to go to the .308 instead of .30-06, 300wm, 300rum, etc?

Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
Most people get the larger magnums for the added trajectory. But when you can shoot like Daniel it doesn't matter. Nothing is safe downrange! Unless it's in the Steptoe unit

Last season was definitely a humbling season. Just shows that no matter how much practice you get, mistakes are bound to happen when adrenaline kicks in.Noobie wrote:Most people get the larger magnums for the added trajectory. Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
I mainly archery hunt but I bought a 6.5 and have enjoyed it way more then the 308 or 300 wm I have owned. It has a mild recoil but amazing bc.

Re: What is YOUR deer slayer?
I don't think you will have any problems punching a hole in them, just make sure you have a good grip!Lead ball wrote:Just got my new do it all Revolver except plinking but sence this is a hunting thread it doesn't count I got a Ruger Supper Redhawk Talo Toklat 454 looking forward to punching a hole through a deer or Elk sory can't upload pics from my phone but it does exist
