Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS)

Post by rgg16g » Fri Apr 28, 2017 5:06 pm

Hi all, I have been shooting CAS for about 4 years and I never thought I would enjoy this shooting sport as much as I do. It is a whole lot of fun with a easy going crowd always willing to help you out. Here in the Spokane/CDA area we have four ranges that hold Cowboy Action Shooting events and if you don't mind a few hours of driving there are many more great clubs from Colville in the north to Dayton WA down south, Montana is full of clubs too.

There is a fairly big step to get involved since you need two revolvers, a lever gun, a shotgun, and leather to hold it. That should not dissuade you from coming out and giving it a try. Everyone is very helpful and will gladly let you shoot their guns and ammo free of charge! Once you meet some folks you can get an idea of what you want to buy. In fact I recommend you buy nothing until you have shot a few matches borrowing guns and equipment.

Some worry about the costumes, well don't! To get started all you need to do is show up. When you are new nobody cares. Having said that the minimum standards are pretty easy to deal with. For men all you need is a long sleeve button down shirt, any non designer denim jeans, and some kind of leather work boot. That's is it! For ladies the same standards mostly apply but you can were short sleeved shirts and of course a dress is always nice! Many get into the costuming and like to be period correct (late 1800's) some are more into the shooting, some are into both, like me! The important thing is to come out and try it and we can help you change your attire if you wish.

Here is a video done by Long Hunter, he's been in the sport for a long time.

Here is a list of clubs in our local area, including Colville and Dayton. Some of these ranges are still closed and might be a little late in opening this year due to the bad winter we had.

Where to get the gear. This is just a short list, mainly places I have used, there are many more resources. Don't worry about wading through all the details on your own, let us help you out.

Leather is important, more so than you might think.

Gun work, not needed but sure is nice to slick these guns up. I just like the feel of a well oiled machine working right.

Here is a video of some of us locals (from the Spokane / CDA area) shooing down in Dayton WA ( http://ccshooting.com/ ) last year. It was raining but still fun. This give you an idea of the type of targets and how far they are sometimes set. Here they are quite close but many times they are not. Each club has its own way of doing things.

This is at the Windy Plains Drifters ( directions http://www.windyplainsdrifters.com/directions.php ) near medical lake. We are shooting there both days this weekend (9 to about 1pm), spectators are welcome.
