Marlin question

Post by deerbandit » Tue Oct 24, 2017 11:13 am

Several years ago at a gun shop I saw a Marlin lever action that I really wanted but could not afford. Now I would like to get one but can’t seem to find it. I even went to the website and was not able to find it there either. It was a 45-70 stainless lever action and the barrel was I believe factory ported. Any help on a good model number would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Russ.

Sounds like a Marlin Guide Gun, was the barrel short? I had a blued model that was ported and I hated it. Extremely loud and uncomfortable to shoot.

Yup... sounds like an 1895 Guide Gun.

The 1895gs is stainless. I have heard that the ported ones are extremely loud.

Marlin only did this as a factory option for a couple years before they were bought by Freedom Group. Rarity + JM manufacture = expensive on the used market.

While I'd stay away from used guns made from 2007-2012 (even those with JM barrels), there's nothing wrong with the newer guns. Get a 1895GS or SBL. If you get a $20 cheek pad you won't need nor want the porting, and it's a nice place to store extra ammo.

Ported guide guns are not any louder than an AR with a muzzle brake. I own one. Extremely loud would be an FAL with a brake or a Ruger Blackhawk in 30 carbine. (16 inch barrel on the FAL).

I was also recently looking at the 1895 GBL for great big loop. My hands are a little big and I prefer those over the standard loop. Now that you all mentioned it I now remember the comments about the gun being very loud. I will probably just go with the 1895 GBL and get the ammo cuff on the sleeve. Thanks to all for giving your thoughts and opinions. I learn so much here even though I am 53 and have been shooting for over 45 years. Thanks again to all. Russ.
