Baofeng handheld comms
Is there anyone here that has SHTF radio comms organized? I'm interested in picking up a Baofeng radio and looking for some insight on these and maybe a user group.

Re: Baofeng handheld comms
I have 2 of these handhelds.
A UV-5RA+ and a UV-5R+Plus.
There are subtle differences in the two but they work and function the same for the most part.
I would would suggest to get 2 batteries to just put away and don't use at all, don't charge these, till needed.
Get the long ones for use they give the radio a better feel in your hand.
the long battery I have is a EBL model: BL-5L . It fits the +plus perfect but the RA+, I had to file a little part on the bottom of the unit.
as far as any user groups look on google .... I guess ??
go on the internet too www.chirp.com or google, it this program will help you program your unit easier
you will need the acc cable

Black box by Kleinelectronics.com. They are medium priced.Grendel509 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 28, 2021 1:20 pmWhat would you recommend?GeorgOrwell wrote: ↑Sun Nov 28, 2021 12:42 pmThis company has its roots in China. Please be aware of it before making a purchase.
Last I heard they are an American company and radios built right here in the USA. Modeled after the Motorola.
Hope this helps in your research.

Re: Baofeng handheld comms
I’m not seeing that they have anything Ham compatible. Even though Baofeng is a Chinese company, they really own the inexpensive Ham market.Blassted wrote: ↑Sat Dec 04, 2021 3:46 pmBlack box by Kleinelectronics.com. Re: Baofeng handheld comms
I just got the 2 pack from Amazon for $55, they came with a programming cable, long antenas, and other accessories. I got them for snowmobiling, not SHTF. They seem to be of pretty good quality and were fairly easy to program, I used CHIRP software and my home PC to program. BCA is the snowmobiling go to radio, but they are $200 each and are 1 watt, the baofengs are $25ish and 5 watt.

Re: Baofeng handheld comms
CHIRP is a program you can use on the computer to program your radios. It requires a pig tail to use though. It allows you to easily save frequencies and title them and duplicate them over several radios instead of programming them manually and individually.
Tons of videos on YouTube with using chirp or by hand.

Re: Baofeng handheld comms
Which model of radio did you get? Programming is pretty easy for our area. You'll probably want to see if it's repeater capable, and if so, then I recommend the 10 year $35 GMRS license from the FCC (no test). Once you get the license, the owners of the repeaters will be more than happy to have you join the conversations. There's a decent size group on FB as well, but check out mygmrs.com and you'll see the repeaters in our area.

Re: Baofeng handheld comms
I have a few of those and the programming cable. I also have the file you can load into CHIRP. Let me know if you need help setting it up.
