How to build CHEAP & REUSABLE targets!

Post by mknkt » Thu Apr 25, 2013 10:45 pm

I had an idea the other day, so I tried it out and it work GREAT! Stack up some free tires, I stacked them my height. Paint the face you want to shoot with cheap/free paint, I used a light color and was able to see exactly where I was hitting very well. When your done shooting, paint over each hit and you have a new target ready to go! Now paint a silhouette or maybe some zombies :) I'm planning on setting up a course out behind my house for some run & gun action, I can't wait to get lots of tires, already have a 5 gal bucket of paint that's been sitting around for years.

Do you fill the void within the tires with dirt? Please try and post some pics, I am interested.

I know where you (or anyone) can get A LOT of used tires for free and completely legal. If anyone is interested, send me a PM. Plus my boss will thank me :D

Safety first. While it may seem like a good idea at first, and you may never have an issue with them, it can be less safe when shooting steel belted radials. Even non steel tires can have a tendency to cause bounce backs, even with 45s.

Here is an article that goes in depth on setting up shooting ranges.

I can tell you from experience that getting hit in the nutz by a bounceback 45 is no fun. As a matter of fact, after that I didn't have any more kids!! ;) :D

I doubt that it would ever be a problem with high power pointed rifle bullets. The problem would be when using flat nose or even round nose pistol rounds. Especially if they are non jacketed. The bullet hits the tire and mushrooms before a pass through and has no choice but to haunt the person who shot it. :o If it where me, I wouldn't fill the the tires completely full of dirt, but rather just the back sides of the tires and leave the front (side of the shooter) hollow to allow pass through, then hit the dirt of the half filled tire and fall into the middle.

This is interesting, we fired thousands of rounds inside of live fire houses that were almost completely constructed out of old tires :o
