Ford,
I cant say enough good stuff about the radio that you have. I would tell you that you need a HAM License to transmit on it.
I have programed mine up in the past and used this website. http://www.miklor.com/uv5r/ He has all the software and examples you need. However, you will need a cable. I need to get another one as well as I have misplaced mine.
I would recommend that you put the weather alert and go to some of the Patriots or Prepped or Oath Keepers meetings around this area and get the list of local bands that they use for emergencies.
You can also check out radiofreeredoubt
The cable is only $8.00 on amazon and it comes with software. Link below:

FYI you can get the UV5R for about $20.00 on sale and with a HAM license you can talk to people miles and miles away.
Someone that is much more knowledgeable than my self should set up some Channel for the SGT like minded thinkers. Just something in case the SHTF we would have some way to communicate with other Gun guys to be able to trade and help each other out...

I have the same radio and just got my HAM license last year and was looking for this softqare and cable also. They programmed our radios in the class but in my tinkering and playing on it I managed to reset eveything and lost all the channels.

No software or cable is needed. The radio can be programmed via the keypad.

yes it can... I have done it.Moscow wrote:No software or cable is needed. The radio can be programmed via the keypad.
You can also mount your own tires on rims with out taking to a tire shop. I have done that too... but for $8.00 and the free software... and if you have to program more than 1 radio. Just saying for me it is worth the investment.

My dad(w7kll) and myself (Kd7fye) Use a program called chirp. I seems to be ez and If you don't want to get your ham ticket, just use it on the FRS frequencies on low power and you should be fine

Re: Baofeng UV5R-V2
I have. I picked up a BF-F8HP and programmed it using CHIRP. I'd recommend getting a Nagoya NA-771 antenna as well, since the stock Baofeng antennas are not that great.

I have one of those radios, any good sites to learn how to use it?

I have one and a couple buddies too. Would sure like to have a channel for local Spokane patriots in the event that we need to rally together and they shut the internet down.
