1000 yds Range finder

Post by ninjassassin » Mon Mar 23, 2015 7:09 pm

Im currently looking for a range finder that will read a deer size animal or trees or rocks out to 1000 yds reliably. I'm looking for something affordable and relieble. Price wise I'd like to stay under $500. What do you guys have or have used that you wouldn't mind recommending or not recommending.

I have a Leica 1600b which you can't get new for $500, but it is one very nice rangefinder. 1000 yard deer is no problem even in the middle of a field. My hunting group has many different rangefinders with different ones from Leupold, Bushnell and some Swarovski rangefinder binos. Only the Leica's and Swaro binos will range deer at 1000 yards in the middle of a field or yellow grass opening. The others will get the trees behind or in front of the opening. Trees out past 1500 easy and have had readings with really good light to 1900+ on trees. It is a nice size to fit in a breast pocket and readings come very quick.

+ 1 on the Leica, I only have the 1200 model but it is superior to all the other brands that I have been around. If I have to ever buy another ,it will be the 1600 Leica.

Thanks Ive been eyeing the Leica and Zeiss but they are a bit out of my price range but I guess buy once cry once. How far can you range game out to with the Leica holding it in your hands without putting it on a a tripod? I have a Leupold RXII and 90% of the time it wont range anything over 400 yds if your not absolutly still.

400 yds is nothing for the Leica. With my 1200 I once ranged a man at a little over 900 yds with no problems. My longest was 1137 but I had to hold it tight, no tripod though. I would go with the 1600 if I ever have to do it over again. In reality my personal ranges on game have been 300ish to 700ish for spot and stalk hunting. Their great for setting target and waterfowl decoys also. Pattern your shotgun at 40 to 50 yds then place your farthest decoy accurately. You always know your in range for the far shots. Just a matter of seconds with the Leica, push the button twice and your on.

I have never used a tripod for ranging. The little Leica fits the hand well and if don't have the shakes, ranging deer to 1000yds with the 1600 is no problem free hand.

One thing I really like about have the 1800+ yard capability is I can range an elk or at least a big tree near it a couple ridges away at say 1700yds, then range the ridge top between us so see if I got to that ridge would I be close enough to shoot, or am I going to have to make a completely different plan to get in rifle range.

I stopped by cabelas today and looked at the Leica's and Ziess. I really like the Leica. Its more compact and has a clearer image campared to the Ziess. They are a bit out of my price rage though.

+1 on the Leica, I have a 1200 and if I hold it steady I have ranged out to almost 1400yds. There is a Leica 800 for sale under classifieds for $275 it's a great deal if you can get by with a little less yardage
