30 cal battle rifle suggestions
Other than a Springfield Standard Rifle M1A I don't own any 30 cal semi-auto rifles nor have I fired any others. What are your thoughts on rifles/platforms/calibers to consider.
AR10
AK47
M1 Garand
???
If you suggest either a AR or AK, what manufacturer do you recommend. I would most likely want to put a scope on it which may lead me to the AR10 only?
Thanks,

Re: 30 cal battle rifle suggestions
I think you should consider a FAL too if you can find one reasonably priced.
Not to start a war over 308 battle rifles, but I think the FAL was the best in its day.
Over 90 countries adopted it. Only one chose the M14.

Re: 30 cal battle rifle suggestions
If you're looking to scope it, I'd definitely steer you towards an AR 10 type rifle, otherwise you're asking it to something it just wasn't meant to do and you'll end up dealing with funky mounts and or cheek weld and eye relief issues.
The big thing with the AR 10s, is if you plan on building, you have to research and verify the pattern of the parts. There is no uniformity like 15s, where you order a part and it will work with any other part.

Picked up a M&P10 with a vortex scope. Super nice rifle and the accuracy is amazing.

Re: 30 cal battle rifle suggestions
Hk 91, uh I mean a PTR 91 .
I've heard good things about them especially there accuracy, they suppress well too.
FAL is good , but accuracy is not there strong side but there ergonomics are good.
If all else fails to interest you, I think a AR 10 would make you happy, there ergonomic and have many accessories and the right one can be really accurate, like arborron posted.

Re: 30 cal battle rifle suggestions
Strictly looking at the availability of part/accessories to config your weapon system the way YOU need it to operate...
AK-47- some parts available, you'll probably have to order most all of it online...Only the REAL true Kalasnikov carries the reputation of the AK. All these other makers that sell for $4-500 are not the 'ultra reliable beast' you think it is.
M1 Garand- OutF-ingStanding rifle (own one and love it) Low capacity, not many options to improve on to make "better". Besides, modifying an M1 is kinda sacrilegious in the gun community, lol.
AR-10- Lots of options to modify to YOUR specific application. Parts will be far easier to acquire locally. Kind of a dirty operating system for that size cartridge, especially when you're pushing 43 grains of powder every time you torch a round off.
Plus lots of other 30 cal systems out there...define YOUR application, find a reliable system, being able to get spare parts fast and easily is a massive plus!!

Re: 30 cal battle rifle suggestions
Depends on your needs I guess. I chose to start with an AR15 in 300 blackout and am going to build an AR10 next. Both are cool. The 300 blackout was easier to build and start with due to parts availability and it makes a great deer gun. 308 is great too and better for longer distances.
I've always kind of liked the Ruger mini-30 too....

So- with this round being dirty in an AR platform, would you choose direct impingement or piston?
I'm in the market (early Christmas present )...

Re: 30 cal battle rifle suggestions
I don't know how much you want to spend, or if you already made a decision, but I went out shooting yesterday and brought out my brothers Scar 17. One of the best rifles I've shot. Light weight for a 308, accurate, and fast follow up shots, very mild recoil. You can still get one for a good price if you backorder one, but there going for just north of 4 grand right now on GB , but I suspect prices will drop once Trump takes office

Re: 30 cal battle rifle suggestions
I don't see how you can improve on your M1A unless you were to shorten the barrel and make it like the 18 inch Scout Squad model. In my opinion the 16 inch SOCOM is too stubby, the standard M1A is too long but the 18 inch Scout is just right.hatchdog wrote:Other than a Springfield Standard Rifle M1A I don't own any 30 cal semi-auto rifles nor have I fired any others. Re: 30 cal battle rifle suggestions
I ended up with this Rock River LAR-8 Predator series which has a 20" bull barrel and the full A2 stock. This fit my needs/wants perfectly as I was looking for more of a bench/prone rifle rather than a "run and gun" set up. I mounted a Vortex Viper HST 4-16x44 on it and I am very impressed with the scope. I have only fired this to break in the barrel and sight in at 100 but hope to get it out to Mica for some longer range shooting once I get a load developed for it. (reloading bench is still in storage but my reloading room is being completed as I type)
Matt out at Tier 1 had this rifle on consignment and it was unfired and came with a handful of extra mags, 5, 10 and 20 round.

Hatchdog, you SCORED! that's a beautiful Rifle. I especially like the Classic buttstock and the plain, uncluttered forestock/handguard. Let us know how it shoots

My personal pics, would be a nice DSA FAL, or the SCAR 17S. Both rifles are damn hard to beat in my opinion.

Re: 30 cal battle rifle suggestions
I had a PTR91 for years, it has a lot going for it but I ended up selling it and buying an Adams Arms AR10.
If you want ridiculous AK-like reliability and dirt cheap magazines, the HK pattern is great. They do kick hard, the charging handle is a PITA particularly for lefties, and there just aren't many affordable accessories for them. I know PTR has been welding rails up top for some time, and now have finally threaded their barrels for AR10 muzzle devices vs. the pitifully small number of choices in the original G3 thread pitch.
My AR10 kicks less, is way easier to scope, far more ergonomic, and the chamber (with the piston system) is much easier to clean. Downsides are some proprietary parts, $20 mags vs. $3, and you actually have to lube the gun or it might not run.
I don't know much about FALs. Once I heard they don't keep zero real well, I avoided them. I kind of wanted a Kel-Tec RFB but quite frankly have had a problem or two with every Kel-Tec I've owned.
Ken Royce aka "Boston T. Party" of Boston's Gun Bible has a really good, but a tad outdated, write-up of the strengths and weaknesses of the old-school battle rifles (M1A, FAL, HK91, AR10).
