Project, Colt Government...

Post by RLHas » Tue Feb 02, 2016 8:10 am

Received this in trade and thought I'd do something different...

A nice specimen of a sweet series 80 Stainless piece but it did have the typical flaws...

Semi finished product...

The original beavertail was a bit low and felt awkward to me so I refitted a higher one...

Pistol shoots like a dream and has an amazing trigger (if I do say so myself)

Well done Rick, looking great! :D

That's a stainless gun, right? How did you darken the lower part hear the muzzle , the low portions of the cocking serrations and the Grip safety?

Also did the gun come with that NM barrel bushing and what else if abnything did you do to accurize it?

The pics are not as good as they should be.
The pistol is a stainless pistol, We do stainless nitride blackening so I blackened the whole gun then semi polished the slabs to give it a cloudy affect. Out there on the muzzle it is silver just doesn't show in the pic due to the angle.
I added the NM bushing and performed the trigger job.
I really haven't shot the pistol for accuracy but as tight as it is now and as smooth as it is I can't help but think it will not be a disappointment. I'm going to try to get out this weekend to prove it.

Right on, Richard. Maybe some people don't know this but the NM bushings are made oversized and have to be fitted to both the barrel and the slide so that it's a tighter interface with just enough play to function reliably. This helps accuracy. I have one on my 1911. Colt came out with the collet bushings on the series 70 which helped the bushing-to-barrel fit but those things had a tendency to break so most people replaced them. My younger brother in Californiahas one that he bought new way back in 1979 and he still has it but he's modified it quite a bit over the years.

Good to see you working your magic on a 1911. One of these days I'm going to bring in my H-power for you to work on the feed ramp so it will feed HP ammo. Right now it shoots real good with federal 147 FMJ's and seems to prefer those to anything else and maybe I should be happy with that, but I'd still like the gun to not be so ammo-specific so I can shoot it with whatever happens to be laying around.
