Plastic fantastic.... 1911
I was recently eyeballing EAA's Tanfoglio Witness 1911P. It is a standard 1911 with a few mods, and a polymer frame.
Well, it's a steel reinforced poly frame , that supposedly has no plastic to steel contact.
It looked pretty interesting, Anyone have any experience with one?

The only reason I can see for it is to shave a pound (or more) off the carry weight.
A fully loaded all metal 1911 is a pretty hefty chunk of steel to try to conceal.
Regardless of a person's opinion - good, bad, or indifferent - you have to admit, it is somewhat of a novel idea.
Not quite sure why someone hasn't done it before, but it's the first poly 1911 I can recall seeing....

The STI 2011 is a composite partial frame pistol which is kinda cool because if money is no object you can go from a doublestack to a single stack using the same slide assembly. Great for the competitipors!BC38 wrote:A bit of a traditionalist when it comes to the 1911?The Mechanic wrote:I see no reason to have produced this monstrosity.

That STI 2011 looks like about the same idea as the EAA the OP posted....RLHas wrote:The STI 2011 is a composite partial frame pistol which is kinda cool because if money is no object you can go from a doublestack to a single stack using the same slide assembly. It doesn't seem like a bad concept - if you can get past the break with tradition - and can handle the recoil of the 45 acp out of a light weight poly frame.

Both BUL M5 and the Kimber BP TEN come to mind as having poly frames.
IIRC Kimber used the BUL frame.
I bought an BUL M5 from another SGT member, great 1911 style firearm.

I have a poly framed double stack (BUL frame marked Springfield) It weighs 25 oz w/o mag-- the same as my alloy framed Para P-12. It's an old kit gun I picked up - It was on a Para P-12 alloy frame- prob built in the early '90's when the kits were available. Recoil?? To me doesn't seem any brisker than any other .45..
Google Poly 1911 frames for an interesting history... (also Charles Daly used BUL frames before they went belly up)
(notice the Stainless insert)
note: din't resize the photos-open in another window to see gun completely - has ported barrel

Re: Plastic fantastic.... 1911
Sounds like the concept has some merit - at least enough that the new EAA offering has some competition. I'm kinda surprised that the poly frame only saves about a half a pound in weight. Still 2 pounds vs 2-1/2 pounds is 20% weight savings.
At <$600 it looks like one of the most affordable poly 45s. Not surprising since their other guns are generally on the lower cost end of the scale.
Personally I don't own any 45's - I'm more of a DA revolver guy and when I do go with a bottom feeder, I strongly prefer DA/SA guns over the standard SA designs like the 1911.

Re: Plastic fantastic.... 1911
I was turned off more by the poly frame revolvers out now than these. Either way, I'm always interested in more options and the traditional models will always be there.
Csmret, very interesting pistol.

cost is the reason I was looking at it, I ran across one for sale for $430.BC38 wrote: At <$600 it looks like one of the most affordable poly 45s. Not surprising since their other guns are generally on the lower cost end of the scale.

I don't care who you are, a polymer 1911 just shouldn't exist....it was pushing it when they went to an alloy frame!!!

Re: Plastic fantastic.... 1911
This followed me home yesterday. It's an ATI with a polymer frame. Fired 60 rounds through it today and it functioned fine with 230 ball, 200 LSWC - IPSC load, 220 gr LRN and Remington 230 JHP. It shot fairly well, could use the trigger lightened up. It supposedly uses Glock sights and the plate on top of the slide is for mounting a red dot type sight. For the money I am pleasantly surprised.

Re: Plastic fantastic.... 1911
Here's a link to their web page. I didn't pay that much, for sure! I see according to this that the frame inserts are aluminum. I know I don't plan on putting thousands of rounds through it, just wanted something lighter than a regular 1911 for when I ride my motorcycle and 1911 style grips frames point correctly for me. Looks as though it also has a limited lifetime warranty!
