Thread revival....new project

my Father-in-Law picked it up at a yard sale for $40 for me.

It is a Remington model 58 12 gauge semi-auto, made in 1956, the walnut looks pretty good but the metal has pink rust spots.

anyway, here is what it looked like when he brought it to me:

Dis-assembly, the trigger group is removed just like any other Remington 870/1100, just push out the two pins.

The stock had two holes, one for the bolt and the other for???

Image

In this picture you can see the action bar where it attaches to the piston (which is mounted in the front portion of the magazine, which is why the magazine only holds two rounds.

Image

Image

The trigger housing is aluminum and the finish looks horrible, since I have not tried anodizing yet and a polished housing would look good on this gun, I decided to strip and polish it

Image

OK now what? I guess I need to take this mess of parts and make a working trigger mechanism out of them

While I was at it I polished some of the other parts

Image

I also polished the bearing surfaces of the hammer

Image

After much cursing, dis-assembly and reassembly I finally have a working trigger mechanism

Image

now on to the steel

The next step was to remove the rust and old bluing using naval jelly

Image

I then remove the remaining bluing along with the acid "etching" with the wire wheel on my grinder

Image

Then we start removing the pits, starting with 120 grit emory cloth, then moving to 220 grit sand paper

Image

I kept moving up on the grit until I got to 2000 grit (wet/dry) sand paper, the metal is almost ready for bluing

Image

I then went to work on the barrel, there was a large rust pit on the magazine ring, I used a file to get it smooth again

Image

then I sanded the barrel to 600 grit and used the buffer to make it shine, the black stuff on the metal is buffing compound

Just finished another project, a Ruger old model (3-screw) Blackhawk. I reblued the metal, adapted a Colt brass grip frame and made my own grip panels from bloodwood.

The Brass grip frame and the grips really compliment the Blackhawk, well done in all regards!

VERY nice work for a guy who's just learning.

You should go visit Scott at Firearms Finishing off of Frances near Crestline. He is the Kung Fu MASTER of gun refinishing. He refinished a classic Belgian FN Browning Semi Automatic SA-22 for me and removed the flaws but kept the engraving and the lettering remained sharp ad he replicated the factory bluing perfectly. I was able to get it for a reasonable price ar Cabelas because it looked bear up. But I refinsished the wood with aarin tung oil, and scot did the metal and now the gun looks like a million dollars or at least $750.oo! scott is reasonable with his prices too.

beautiful work re-blueing. I have a couple candidates and wonder if I could study enough get to it like you have. In the ruger pistol refinishing it appears as if you managed to keep the blueing out of the stamped letters. Is this intentional? If so how do you do it. Or is it just a trick of the cameral angle?

I think what you are seeing is wax, after bluing and oiling I coat the surface with carnuba wax, it sometimes gets in the lettering. There is no way that I know of to keep the bluing out of the lettering.

I bought a rifle at a garage sale for $20, it was missing the bolt, trigger guard and rear sight elevator.
JC Higgins model 41 (Marlin 100/101). I decided to try and build a cheap youth trainer rifle, by shrinking the dimensions and then refinishing the wood and steel. I think it turned out pretty good. The best part is it didn't cost me a nickel, I actually made money on the project!

Here is what I started with:

and here it is finished:
