Ar-10 optics what do you use
I'm torn between a red dot magnifier combo and going with a variable scope.
Red dot magnifier would be something like an aim point
Scope would be something like a Zeiss conquest variable
What do you use and why?

I have a Vortex Viper HST 4-16x44 on mine. My rifle is a 20" heavy barrel with an A2 stock so the heavy scope is not a problem. I use it for F Class shooting at 300 and 600 yards. Not a good setup for hunting or moving while shooting but fine for the bench or prone.

If you are considering a red dot with magnifier. I wold recommend a variable 1 - 5 power scope. At one power you can shoot with both eyes open like a reflex sight. Plus you can shoot accurate at longer ranges.

Re: Ar-10 optics what do you use
I use a Nikon M-308 4-16x44. It is enough scope that I can have it set at 4x and quickly acquire targets all day at 25-100 yards and consistently be in the 2-3" group @ center mass when shooting 3-shot in 2 second sets and then I can dial it up for 400-600 yard shots. Out past that though and you're pretty safe standing in front of the target.

I like the 1-5 idea and maybe even a little more, then mount a mini reflex on the scope

You don't need a reflex with a scope that does 1x. I have a Hi-Lux CMR 1-4x on my 16" AR10. I really like illuminated 1-4x scopes, sure the 1-6 and 1-8 models do more but you're going to pay for it, and the light transmission at those higher magnifications just can't be all that great.Jared535 wrote:I like the 1-5 idea and maybe even a little more, then mount a mini reflex on the scope

Really depends on what you want to do with it. I'm a big aimpoint fan for around 0-300 defense or 0-200 hunting. If it is for a general purpose rifle that could include some medium range hunting, I like to use a Leupold 2.5-8x36.
A "whiz" means you're generally disliked. A crack means its personal... A 107mm rocket means you shouldn't have worn flip flops...

Re: Ar-10 optics what do you use
I think that power range is fine for general purpose. It will be slower than a red dot up close, less precise than a high power at distance, but be able to do a fair bit of both with practice (while being cheaper than the 1-6x or 1-8x). General purpose really means a compromise all the way around so make sure neither of those limitations bother you too much with how you plan on using it. Otherwise, there are 1.5-4x's and 3.5-10x's Leupolds at a similar price. If you have any doubts, go slow. Maybe go to a sporting store and have them put the scope in one of the testing stocks (haven't bought from a store in a while, but they used to have those at least). Try it for quick ups and for what distance you can see at the store. Good luck.

Re: Ar-10 optics what do you use
So I just bought the Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 as well as the Burris PEPR 1 piece mount. I watched a lot of videos and no one ever said anything negative about it and some even said it was the best under $500. If it ends up not working on the 10 I have no doubt it will work on my 15.

I use Nikon ProStaff 4-12 x 40 Black Matte Riflescope. Pretty handy. Not as hardcore as the M308, this is still a Nikon product and that means you can rely on itaero precision|noveske
