Armed Private Security Company

Post by racerx » Fri Dec 29, 2017 4:04 pm

Looking for information, and/or Pro’s and Con’s on my new (maybe) venture...

Customizable, personalized armed security and protection services.

Armored vehicles for transportation of clients?

Tactics and decorum?

Experienced retired operators, or retired Law Enforcement Officers for employees vs. training new meat?

So many questions...

Feel free to leave your opinion here, any and all information would be helpful in making a decision on moving forward with this!

Thank you SGT

In this area? Sounds like a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.

Liability insurance would be astronomical. Both general and auto.

The heaviest “light” reading ever... so many rules and regulations. Insurance requirements were less than we first thought though...

The time to get into this was about 12 yrs ago. IMO the window to form security companies and obtain viable contracts has long passed. Even in the Seattle area most of the tactical security contractors have gone out of business.

Having worked as an armed security officer in Spokane... Don't bother. The company I worked for (I left in the first quarter of 2017) is constantly being sued and their insurance costs are unreal. In order for you to stay in a profitable position, you would need to expand to Seattle, Boise, etc. There isn't a market out here for it when compared to the west side of the state, northern Oregon and so forth.
ETA: Not to mention...
If you're going to do just executive protection, you'd be looking at a front loaded cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, if not more. Do you want to roll up to pick up a high roller executive in an up-armored Escalade or a Rav 4 that's been set up as a patrol vehicle? So, you would need some pretty hefty contracts up front. Remember, in a lot of ways this business is all about presentation. Then you would have employee costs. Training, licensing, outfitting, snazzy uniforms (clients love those) salary/ hourly wage, etc. You could push that cost onto the employee. But, in my experience, that isn't cost effective on the employee and if you would do so, they would likely just leave. How much do you want to pay your employees? At, let's say $13-15 an hour you're not going to pull in quality people. At $22-27 an hour you MIGHT snag 2 or 3 good employees. Salaries or management? Minimum to get someone worth a sh*t would be equal to what local PD's pay. So, why would I work for a private security company when I can work for a PD and, very likely, get a better benefits package and a pension?
I don't mean to be negative, but there's a lot more to it than just what you asked.

So, this looks like a fail—

Anybody have any fresh ideas for a lucrative business up here in The Great Northwest?

I’m interested in changing career directions, there HAS to be a void that needs to be filled in the Spokane area...

Ninja services?

Animal whisperer?

Mobile cupcake decorating?

I’m willing to entertain any and all new ideas- sometimes the silliest things hit big (pet-rock)

Any ideas?

First off sit down and figure out what your end goal is. Becoming a millionaire and retiring at 40 or working at something you love until you are 92 is going to require two very different game plans. If you do not know where you are going before you start your trip you will only end up lost all the time.

I will tell you this most people are not willing to do what it takes to be successful in business, the hours, the risk are huge.

What do you like to do that you can get paid to do?

^^^^^^^^ That’s The $64,000.00 Question!!!

I’ve been in the construction trades for over 30 years- 20 plus years in the IUPAT union, but our pension fund was squandered by greedy investment companies. Should have been able to semi-retire at 50— but looks like I’ll have to work until I die...
I actually enjoy what I do here, but with a depressed economy and lack of “disposable income” in our area, every year up here gets harder and harder to move forward and not stagnate. Lucrative contracts seem to be a thing of the past, everybody wants super high quality restoration jobs on their historical homes- but they are not willing to pay what it takes to successfully complete said projects— not really sure I want to continue just giving it away to the wealthy sector of our town...
So- looks like the choices for this old guy are narrowing by the day. Ugh...

No offense intended but I think you have already made up your mind you can't.

I hear ya brother- we have been building my company, and it’s sterling reputation up here, for over three years so far. I have tons of money and time invested in it— all the licenses, insurance, bonds, certifications including lead and asbestos abatement, TAXES... I’m not thinking of abandoning it or closing up shop anytime soon, but my possibilities of maximizing my profit potential seem to be evaporating rapidly. If the economy would do a quick 180* change, and people felt a little better about their financial stability, they would pump money into, inevitably- their largest investment- their homes.
We’ll keep pushing— never give up, never surrender.

But- if something better comes around...

Have you registered with the Corp of Engineers in Walla Walla I used to do lead abatement for them all the time.

It paid well but the paper work was a bear.

Three years into a business is a tough time for most, hang in there you will succeed.

A guy I knew got a deal on a Bobcat at an equipment auction and started a construction equipment rental company from that. I'd say look around in the immediate local area and see what people are renting from Star or United...they might prefer to rent from a local outfit if the option was available to them.
