Had a squib load the other day

Post by Flawlessfoose » Wed Feb 07, 2018 7:23 pm

Just a heads up.
I've never had one before, and I'm glad I caught it before I fired one behind it :o
Took the barrel out of my P229 down to Firearms Finishing and he had it out in a matter of minutes, and hardly charged me too. I totally recommend them! They had told me they seen American Eagle fail in 45 LC here just recently as well.
Anyways, it was American Eagle 9mm 147 gr.

Glad you're o k... So far, I've only had this happen to me one time. The thought of "what if" will always be there... ;)

Thanks BB,
If something seems odd, always stop and inspect.
To me it really was obvious when it went "PoP" and no real recoil, instead of "Bang" LOL.

One other "accident" I had a few years ago was somehow a 10mm round ended up in my Taurus 1911 45acp. I don't know how in the hell it got there but it was about it the middle of the mag and it fired and cycled just fine and no damage was done. Weird how things like this can happen.

Glad you are ok, I constantly worry about this same situation happening to me. I have been fortunate so far. I’m digging the early 2000s Camry though, I have one myself. Great commuter rig.

Camry? Haha close, it's actually a 01 Tacoma and I love that truck! Probably same looking interior.

If you start reloading, squibs are a little more common. I shot in matches 20 years ago and would occasionally have a squib to clear during a match. I got to where I could clear a squib in a Browning Hi-Power in 30 seconds. I carried a Monadnock D-Jammer to punch out squibs. No big deal. A cleaning rod would work just as well. Just DO NOT rack the slide and pull the trigger if the previous round went pfthbpt instead of bang. Stop, inspect, punch it out, get going.

Your experience also brings to mind why actual defensive ammo is so much more expensive than the practice stuff. Not only the better materials that go into each round, but the 100% quality control so you can rest assured that your weapon goes bang every time it's supposed to. That's why it's recommended to not carry range/practice ammo (i.e. American Eagle/UMC/etc.) in a defensive firearm except for it's intended purpose: practice. Quality standards are a bit looser on range ammo.
