barrel rate of twist

Post by Hector_lives » Sun Nov 27, 2016 9:19 am

Pardon my glaring ignorance gentlemen, but in looking at 5.56 AR rifles, I'm struck by how many different barrel twists I see. Can someone please take a minute and enlighten me about why this is and more importantly, which rate of twist is most desirable and why? Thank you! :geek:

Good info Bob...
Ammo that will be used is the key. :)

A 1/8 twist is probably the best all around barrel twist if you want to shoot a wide range of ammo weights. 1/9 starts to have a problem over 70gr in some reports, some people still get ok results though. 1/7 is good for the heavy rounds and still works good for 55gr but have been reports of lighter bullets having issues.

+1 I have a 1/8 twist and it shoots 50gr-62gr ammo very well. 55gr and 62gr are the most popular weight bullets you are going to find anyway unless you plan on using your rifle for hunting or long range.
