Mossberg 500 vs remington 870
Hey guys, I'm looking to buy my first pump shotgun and it sounds like these two manufacturers got it right. I know the basic differences between the two (single vs dual extractors, loading gate, steel vs aluminum, magazine extensions) I guess I'm trying to see why you guys would pick one over the other. Any advice would be helpful as I will be buying one of them next week

I have an 870 express mag 12ga and a .410 wing master, both are nice guns but I much prefer my Winchester 1300 12ga and my Winchester 1200 20ga. The Winchesters have much slicker actions and they aren't as "blocky" feeling when you carry/mount them. Definitely look into a Winchester pump before you make a decision.

I have had 870s, 500s, and 1200s. They are all good guns. Not sure which I liked the best, maybe Remy by a nose.
I still have a Maverick 88. Best value out there and roughly half the price of others mentioned.
You won't feel guilty beating up your $200 Maverick either.

Re: Mossberg 500 vs remington 870
As far as control feature go...The Mossberg 500 has the safety selector on the top of the receiver so you can very clearly go from safe to kill without having to manipulate the weapon to visually see the weapon is on safe/kill mode...Remington has the safety in front of the trigger guard...
Also, the Mossberg 500 has the slide release button behind the trigger guard where you don't have to move your hand off the pistol grip to slide the pump to change loads/reload/make safe the weapon...Remington has there's in front of the trigger guard so you have to take your hand off the pistol grip to change loads/reload/make safe...
Both have lots of accessories, lots of mod's available, both are very reliable and durable...
Mossberg 500's have the barrel retention cap soldered to the barrel...meaning you can't put a tube extension on it...Remington, you can, being that the cap is a separate piece of the barrel and tube. Both of them can accept different type of barrels and are cheap. In fact, Mossberg makes the barrels for Remington...most people don't know that.
I suggest getting the one that you are the most comfortable to use...

Re: Mossberg 500 vs remington 870
Most of my experience is with the Mossberg and then primarily as a pistol grip only for breaching (army). I love 500's but you have to think about the tang safety if you are going to put any kind of pistol grip on your shotgun. If a pistol grip stock was my goal I would prefer the safety on the trigger guard. Good luck.
A "whiz" means you're generally disliked. A crack means its personal... A 107mm rocket means you shouldn't have worn flip flops...

Re: Mossberg 500 vs remington 870
If you shoot lefty, the Mossberg is the best choice b/c of the tang safety.
The only thing I don't like about the Mossberg is the aluminum receiver. It gets worn by the bolt and the action bars eventually, and it's the serialized part. Can't easily get a replacement (FFL).

Re: Mossberg 500 vs remington 870
+1 on the Winchester 1300 option suggested above.
The only issue I've ever had with it was when I bought it (used), the previous owner didn't take care of it and one of the slide arms snapped off rendering it inoperable on the 7th round fired. After replacing the action, I dunno if I've ever had a malfunction and that was years ago when it broke. They're great shotguns, give em a look.
