looking for opinions on my scope

Post by Noobie » Thu May 18, 2017 4:36 pm

Hey guys, I just picked up a swfa ss 16x42 scope. It looks and feels like a quality scope. I plan on using It on my 300 win mag to shoot Long range targets as well as hopefully long range hunting. Is this a a good scope to work with? Am I wasting my time? Thoughts? input?

Is this a fixed 16 power?

You would have been better served with a fixed 10 power, but to answer your core question, yes they are excellent, particularly from a cost benefit perspective, big bang for your buck. ;-)

Yes it is a fixed 16 power. If I would have bought it new I would have probably bought the 10x, however I found it on Craigslist for $120.. i couldn't pass it up

I would never use a fixed 16 power scope in a hunting situation, just not ethical . Too hard to screw up a close shot and while I have shot one deer at 527, (ranged) , most have been from 10 to 100 yards. Long range shooting is fun but not for hunting game. I prefer a 3x9 or4x12 power on my hunting rifles. That 16 x 42 could be fun on long range rock chuck shooting. I had a 6x24 x 50 on a 338 Lapua that I built. It was a fun long range shooter.

I see what you mean. Basically my plan with this rifle and scope configuration is to shoot and practice long range. The early part of deer season I tend to hunt in open mule deer country. But I will probably look at a swfa 3-15 or so.. seems a little better suited for my needs

Meh... taking game at long ranges is certainly an ethical & honorable pursuit in every way, so long as you are qualified & capable of making those kinds of shots.

Now random LR "trick shots", or long range "plinking" for the game if you will for lack of a better name, that is unethical.

I hear that some folks will debate the stock was inequitable in favor of the hunter, but that is true 90% of hunts even when your shot is 100 yds or less, it's true in duck hunting and virtually everything else hunting wise, the game is just as unsuspecting in every one of those scenarios.

Want to feel better about that, try traditional archery! lol

I would say , in my own opinion of coarse. that 95% or more hunters would not be able to make a consistent kill shot over 300 yds. That would be a 12 in circle at 300 yds or more. And being qualified I suppose would give you a better chance as that would mean you would have had some training. But being capable would also mean you had practiced at it. As far as a 42 mm scope is concerned I believe it will be ok for starters, but a larger objective will let you read your mirage a bit better. Especially if your doing your own spotting.
